Watching Casey Neistat’s video “Snapchat Murders Facebook” made me realize how constantly social media changes. It’s all about the latest trend. I’m old enough to remember when MySpace came out. Kids today would laugh if they saw how outdated the technology of MySpace was. Then Facebook came along and essentially wiped out MySpace. While Facebook is still around, it is losing popularity among the next generation. Most of today’s youth prefer Instagram. And even more prefer Snapchat. Snapchat gives people an easy way to tell a story. And after 10 seconds-- it’s gone. Snapchat allows users to share live videos and photos instantly. It has become the most popular social media among the youth today. The takeaway point of Neistat’s video is that the future of social media is young people- who are all about the here and now.
As an educator, I need to stay current on technology and social media trends. Not so that I can “be cool” but so I can educate my students critically use it. I want my students to be critical consumers of what they read and see in all areas of life- including what they see online. In my future classroom I also intend to use social media to teach students how to create. In my future math class I imagine an assignment in which students take their smartphones to capture images of parabolas in real life, and share using a class hashtag. The 21st century is not just about being a critical consumer; it’s about being a creator.
